The Bowl Season Is Down to Three Nights, and Friday Belongs to Doo WopThe Doo Wop Project takes the Bowl stage Friday at 8 p.m., and the resumes are not small. These are performers who came off the Broadway stages of Jersey Boys, Motown, Beautiful and Hairspray. They sing the old street-corner harmonies the way they were built to be sung, then run modern songs through the same machine until something from this decade comes out sounding like 1961. And it is free. No admission charged, same as it has been since 1924, because that is the promise the Bowl made to this town and has never broken. Bring a blanket, get there early. After Friday, two nights remain: the Glenn Miller Orchestra on August 11, and the Redlands Symphony closing with the Fireworks Finale on August 14, violinist Miclen LaiPang on Tchaikovsky. Footlighters Opens Its 81st Season With Two Broke Actors and a Very Bad PlanKen Ludwig's Leading Ladies opens Friday at Redlands Footlighters on Barton Road. Jack and Leo are English Shakespearean actors whose careers have sunk so far they are performing Scenes from Shakespeare on the Moose Lodge circuit in Amish country. They hear a dying woman in York, Pennsylvania plans to leave her fortune to two long-lost English nephews. They decide to be those nephews. Then they arrive and learn the heirs are nieces. Hedley Duncan directs. Ludwig also wrote Lend Me a Tenor, so expect slamming doors, bad disguises and a romance that goes sideways. What I keep coming back to is the number 81. Footlighters has been staging plays here since 1945, run by volunteers who build the sets, sell the tickets and take out the trash. Voted Best Theatre Company in Redlands for 2025, and still the kind of place where you recognize somebody from church up there in a wig. |

🌳 AROUND THE GROVESCowboy songs come down from Pioneertown. The Prickly Pears play a free Smiley Live! concert Wednesday, August 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Contemporary Club, 173 S. Eureka St. Yodeling and close harmony out of the 1940s Western movie era. Family friendly. Call 909-798-7565. New fire safety signs are up at the trailheads. Following last week's fire coverage, the Redlands Fire Department and the Redlands Conservancy have installed wildfire awareness signs at Live Oak Canyon and San Timoteo Canyon trail entrances. North Redlands trails are next. Free breakfast and lunch for every RUSD student. Redlands Unified will provide no-cost breakfast and lunch to every student in 2026-27, regardless of income. School starts Thursday, August 13. Two Saturday markets, one weekend apart. The Grove School's certified market runs this Saturday 8 a.m. to noon at Heritage Park, 11126 Iowa Street, with student-grown produce, hot breakfast and a barn full of goats. The next Saturday, August 15, Mountain Grove hosts The Rare Market, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 27511 San Bernardino Ave. |
Micah House in Redlands is gearing up for its annual Back2School Jam, a free community event where students in need walk away with fully stocked backpacks and a shot at winning a bicycle. Families pay nothing to attend, though supplies are limited and students must be present to receive them. Want to help? You can donate a filled backpack, contribute forty dollars so organizers can shop on your behalf, volunteer at the event, or sponsor at a higher level for broader recognition. Needed supplies include pencils, notebooks, binders, crayons, and erasers — with drop-off available through late July at Trinity Church. |
