As we flip the calendar to 2026, most of us are thinking about resolutions, fresh starts, and new goals. But here's something that doesn't get enough attention on New Year's Day: January 1st is the perfect time to set up your tax success for the entire year. You don't need to spend hours on this. Just thirty minutes of organization today can save you weeks of stress next April. Here's what to do while everyone else is nursing their New Year's hangovers: Create your 2026 tax folder. Whether it's physical or digital, set up a dedicated space right now. Label it "2026 Taxes" and commit to putting every tax-related document in there as soon as you receive it. W-2s, 1099s, receipts for deductible expenses, charitable donations—everything goes in one place. Review your withholding. If you got a huge refund last year, you were essentially giving the IRS an interest-free loan. If you owed a big payment, you might need to adjust your W-4 to avoid penalties. January is the time to make those changes with your employer so your withholding is correct for the full year. Set up quarterly reminders if you're self-employed. Estimated tax payments are due April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following year. Put those dates in your calendar right now with alerts two weeks before each deadline. Missing these deadlines costs you in penalties and interest. If you're behind, make 2026 the year you catch up. Unfiled returns from previous years don't go away—they compound. The IRS gives you credit for voluntary compliance, meaning filing before they come looking for you puts you in a much better position. Starting fresh in January gives you momentum and time to work through any backlog. The key to tax success isn't complicated accounting or secret loopholes. It's simple organization and staying ahead of deadlines. Thirty minutes today, Redlands. That's all it takes to start 2026 on solid financial ground.
