Backyard Hens, School Budget Strain, & Your Weekend Battle Plan

Backyard Hens, School Budget Strain, & Your Weekend Battle Plan

From the Groves

Why This Matters

Some weeks, this town feels a little more like itself than others.

This is one of those weeks. The weather was little cooler and even drizzle of rain. I actually wore sweater to work.

You’ve got a story about backyard hens that is pure Redlands. You’ve got the harder reality of school layoffs that hit a lot closer to home for many local families.

You’ve got Earth Day around the corner, spring break still hanging on, and a weekend lineup that gives you a few good reasons to get out of the house and enjoy where we live.

That’s kind of what this newsletter is built for.

Not just the headlines. The feel of the place. The stuff neighbors talk about. The things that affect real families. And the little reminders that even when the news is heavy, this city still knows how to show up for itself.

Let’s get into it.

Redlands moves closer to allowing backyard hens

City Council voted 5-0 to advance an ordinance that would allow hens in most single-family neighborhoods, with limits based on lot size, new coop setback rules, no roosters, and no slaughtering on residential property. It still needs a final vote before taking effect. Read more →

Redlands Unified sends 60 layoff notices

The district issued preliminary notices to 27 certificated employees, 21 classified employees, and 12 administrators as part of its budget-reduction process. Final action is expected in May. Read more →

Redlands Earth Day action returns April 18

Redlands’ Day of Climate Action runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with workshops, volunteer projects, and a community celebration in Smiley Park, plus extra Earth Week programming leading up to it. Read more →

🌳 AROUND THE GROVES

  • Spring Break Backup: If you’ve still got kids on spring break and need a play, We Rock the Spectrum in Redlands is still running camp through April 3, with half-day and full-day options. Not glamorous, but if you’re a parent trying to keep the week from turning into chaos, this is useful information.

  • Bicycle Classic Preview: A quick look ahead: the 2026 Redlands Bicycle Classic officially rolls in April 8–12. The biggest public-facing downtown action hits Saturday, April 11 and Sunday, April 12 on Citrus Avenue, including the Legends’ Fondo, public races, School Duel, downtown criteriums, and the family-friendly runs. If your family likes Redlands at full volume, next weekend is already shaping up nicely.

  • City Hall Construction Update: The new State Street City Hall project just got more expensive. The Redlands City Council approved a $745,152 increase to the construction management contract, bringing the total project budget to about $16.8 million. The timeline has also grown from 10 months to about 14 months, with full completion expected around March or April 2027.

Tax Day Is April 15. That’s 13 Days Away.

If you have not filed yet, now is the time to move.

You have two smart options: file your return or get your extension in before April 15.

And here is the part too many people miss: an extension gives you more time to file, but not more time to pay. If you think you may owe, do not stick your head in the sand. File the extension, estimate what you can, and stay in the game.

Bottom line: April 15 is the deadline for most taxpayers to file or extend. A valid extension generally gives you until October 15 to file — but any tax owed is still due by April 15.

If you are behind, confused, or worried about what happens next, get help before the penalties and stress pile up.

GRATITUDE & COMMUNITY

Before you head into the weekend, here’s my one last thought:

A town is not just its meetings, budgets, or headlines.

It’s the people in it.

The parents figuring out spring break. The teachers and school staff carrying a lot right now. The small business owners opening their doors. The musicians filling up local rooms. The volunteers getting ready for Earth Day. The families trying to make sense of a busy, expensive, sometimes heavy season of life.

That’s the part of Redlands I never want to lose sight of.

So if you head out this weekend, support something local. Grab a coffee. Walk the market. Catch some live music. Show up for the things that make this place feel like home.

And if you still have not handled your taxes yet, please don’t wait until the last second and make it harder on yourself than it needs to be.

Have a great weekend,
RedlandsNow.com Team
