Inland Legends, A Historic Baton, & Your Weekend Battle Plan |
Introducing Inland Legends with Arte Hernandez, plus a massive arts milestone for Redlands, and where to find the best live music this weekend. |
From the Groves | ||
Why This Matters |
We’re doing something different this week. If you’ve lived in the Inland Empire long enough, you know the real heartbeat of this community is not found in City Hall or the latest development deal. It’s found in the people, the ones who show up, do the work, and make this place worth living in. The musicians. That’s why we’re launching a new recurring feature called Inland Legends. Every so often, we’re going to spotlight someone who has quietly built a real legacy right here in our backyard. We’re starting with a man whose music has been part of the soundtrack of my life for thirty years. Congratulations to Arte Hernandez, selected as the first-ever Inland Legend by RedlandsNow.com. If you haven’t heard Arte before, you’ve missed one of the true originals of the Inland Empire jazz scene. You can often catch him at wine tasting nights at Citrone and at venues across the region. And this week, he’ll be playing in Yucaipa. Plus, we’ve got a historic milestone for the Redlands Symphony, a packed weekend, and your full live music lineup. Let’s get into it. |

Meet The Legend - Arte Hernandez |
Arte Hernandez, local jazz icon and saxophonist, has spent over three decades electrifying Inland Empire stages with his group, the Jazz Junkies.
From San Bernardino’s Las Casitas Restaurant to Cucamonga’s midweek gigs, Arte’s raw, soulful sound has followed generations of music fans, making every room feel special.
His Latin-laced, funky jazz style, joined by acclaimed musicians like Henry Rodriguez, Jeff Olson, and Andre Berry—has made the Jazz Junkies a true regional institution.
But Arte’s impact runs deeper than performance, he’s also an influential teacher, mentoring young musicians across the Inland Empire with the same passion he brings to every set.
Arte’s commitment has helped shape the soul of local jazz, quietly building community, legacy, and inspiration from the stage to the classroom.
Arte Hernandez isn’t just a talented musician, he’s a pillar whose legacy plays on through every note and every student he inspires. Read More... |

The Redlands Symphony has named Deanna Tham as its next music director and conductor, marking a massive milestone for the region. When she takes the podium on July 1 ahead of the orchestra's 75th season, Tham will become the first woman to serve as music director of a major orchestra in the Inland Empire.
Tham emerged from a national search of 96 applicants. She currently serves as music director of the Union Symphony Orchestra in North Carolina and has a massive track record of community-centered programming. "It is rare to find a community as special as Redlands, where the arts are celebrated and uplifted," Tham said. Read the full story at Community Forward Redlands.

GRATITUDE & COMMUNITY |
One of the things I want RedlandsNow to do more of is shine a light on the people who have quietly helped shape this region for years.
Not the loudest people. Not the flashiest people. The real ones. The musicians. So first , congratulations to Arte Hernandez for being selected as the very first Inland Legend by RedlandsNow.com. And if you’ve got a nominee for the next Inland Legend, just hit reply and tell us who it is, and more importantly, why. Send us the musicians, artists, business owners, coaches, veterans, teachers, and quiet builders who have made a real difference in this region. If there’s someone you think deserves that spotlight, I want to hear about them. And if you’re heading out this weekend, enjoy the music, support something local, and take somebody with you. Have a great weekend, Redlands. |
